Nurse-Midwifery Education Program, Division 2, (http://www.nursing.umich.edu/academics/masters/midwifery.html), has been offered since Fall 1998 (under HRSA grant) and is taught by regular facutly.

Required Credit Hours: 50-51; 15 courses and a research project.

Program Description: All distance courses meet at least one time face-to-face. The current dean has asked that no courses be entirely online. There are specific courses for the off-campus program. We have designed our courses into a hybrid model of some face-to-face courses (with heavy web components) and some work done off campus via discussion on coursetools or assignments that can be done at a distance and submitted electronically. No courses are purely face-to-face, and we are working toward decreasing the total number of times students need to come to campus. There is also flexibility with their clinical assignments.

Student Information: Target students are nurses who live outside of the Southeastern Michigan. Students are recruited through normal recruitment mechanisms. Also we have had an outreach person dedicated to recruitment (funded by our grant) for the west side of the state at various times and also the upper peninsula. Most recently we developed a web site as an additional recruitment strategy.

Students currently active in the program: 25
Average number of admissions annually: 8-10, (as low as 6 and as high as 16)

Program Support: There is technology support (in the form of course management systems and the upload/download of homework assignments). Students have access to CTools/CourseTools, but provide all their own computers, software, etc. We help guide students through admissions, etc. but they do all the legwork. Instructional design support comes from our Media Consultant or the University as a whole.
