INTRODUCTION

We are pleased to announce the Lecturers’ Professional Development Grants competition for Lecturers with continuing teaching appointments on the Ann Arbor campus.  In order to acknowledge the many contributions of Lecturers and to provide them with access to funds beyond those ordinarily available, the University has created Lecturers’ Professional Development Grants.

All Lecturers' Professional Development Grants are peer-reviewed by UM faculty.

ELIGIBILITY

Faculty with continuing appointments as Lecturers on the University of Michigan Ann Arbor campus are eligible to apply.  Grants of up to $2,000 each will be awarded to individuals for professional development activities that involve teaching, research, and/or creative endeavors.

The Application Cover Sheet includes an appointment verification section because it is not always possible to tell from a Lecturer’s title whether the appointment is likely to continue.  Visiting Lecturers, Adjunct Lecturers, and Lecturers whose appointments cannot be renewed are not eligible for this competition.  Please note that individuals apply for this grant competition; pairs or groups of applicants are not eligible.

Lecturers who are eligible for Lecturers' Professional Development Grants (LPDG) are also eligible for the Professional Development Fund for LEO Lecturers (PDFLL). Please note that the LPDG and PDFLL differ in the amount of funding, guidelines for eligible submissions, submission deadlines, and application process.

PROPOSAL CONTENT

Lecturers are invited to submit along with the application cover page, a three-page proposal that includes:

  • a description of their planned professional development and the ways in which their scholarship and teaching would be furthered by receipt of a Lecturers’ Professional Development Grant,
  • an itemized budget, and
  • a brief curriculum vitae.

FUNDING

Examples of appropriate expenditures include participation at national or international professional meetings and pedagogical programs, graduate student or work study assistance, computer hardware or software, travel required to access resources of other institutions, subscriptions to professional journals, and editorial assistance.

FUNDING DECISIONS

Proposals will be reviewed by a panel of experienced Lecturers from across University disciplines, and selections will be based on the potential contribution to the University’s missions of teaching and research.  Applicants who have received Lecturers’ Professional Development Grants in the past may seek support for new proposals.  If a choice must be made between projects of equal merit, priority will be given to the proposal submitted by an applicant who has not previously received funds. A one-page report will be required on completion of the activities.

SUBMISSIONS PROCEDURES

Proposals may be submitted by e-mail or in printed form.

E-mail proposals:

Electronic copies of the Application Cover Sheet are available here.

Applicants should complete items 1-8 on the electronic copy of the Application Cover Sheet and email the form with a copy of the three-page proposal to their chairperson or dean for verification of their appointment. The chairperson or dean should complete Item 9 on the application cover sheet and then email the completed form and proposal to crlt.grants@umich.edu.

Applicants are responsible for tracking this process to be sure that department chairs and/or deans receive their e-mailed proposals, verify their appointments, and forward them to CRLT by 4 p.m. on Thursday, January 22, 2009.
