UM Central Administration Awards
The University of Michigan recognizes and values good teaching. As a result, outstanding teaching is a criterion for many awards and prizes offered on campus, especially including the central administrative awards listed below.
Arthur F. Thurnau Professorships

Teaching Innovation Prize (TIP)

Eligibility:
The award is open to faculty on the University's Ann Arbor campus.
Selection Process and Deadline: Nominations from the full range of instructional settings at U-M are encouraged. All Ann Arbor campus faculty, students, chairs, directors, deans, and staff members are eligible to nominate individuals for this prize. Faculty self-nominations are also accepted. Nominations will be judged by a selection committee composed of Thurnau Professors and staff from the Office of the Provost, CRLT, and the Library. The application and selection process will involve two steps.

Distinguished Faculty Achievement

Criteria: Full or associate professors may be nominated for these awards which honor exceptional achievements in scholarly research and/or creative endeavors, teaching, service and other activities that have brought distinction to the University.
Selection Process and Deadline: Nominated by deans, directors, department/program heads or by execuitve, promotion or award committees. Rackham selects recipients based on recommendations of interdisciplinary faculty committee.

Rackham Distinguished Graduate Mentor Award

How Often Awarded: Annually
Criteria: Nominees must be tenured faculty members who have advised a substantial number of doctoral students over a number of years. More than one nomination may be submitted per department or program. Because the D'Arms Award specifically recognizes distinguished mentoring in the humanities, this award will typically go to faculty members in fields other than the humanities.
Selection Process: Nominations may be submitted by the nominee's dean, associate dean, department/program chair, or graduate chair. Graduate students and alumni are encouraged to contact department leadership with appropriate suggestions.

Rackham Master’s Mentoring Awards

How Often Awarded: Annually
Criteria: Nominees must be faculty members who have advised a substantial number of Rackham master’s degree students over a number of years. More than one nomination may be submitted from any one program. Nominees may be a tenured or tenure track faculty member, or a faculty member who is a lecturer, or a clinical or research faculty member. Schools, departments and programs are encouraged to recognize that mentoring may take a variety of forms.
Selection Process: Nominations may be submitted by the nominee's dean, associate dean, department/program chair, or graduate chair. Graduate students and alumni are encouraged to contact department leadership with appropriate suggestions.

Distinguished University Professorships

Award Amount and Number of Awards: The availability of Distinguished University Professorships varies from year to year because the distinction is held until retirement. Each professorship carries with it an annual salary supplement of $5,000 and an annual research supplement of $5,000.
How Often Awarded: Annually
Criteria: These appointments recognize exceptional scholarly and/or artistic achievement, national and international reputation, and superior teaching skills. The duration of the appointment is unlimited, and the title may be retained after retirement. Only faculty with the rank of full professor may be nominated. Distinguished University Professorships are awarded only to members of the faculty currently in service to the University.
Selection Process: Nominations made by deans, directors, and department/program heads. Rackham selects recipients based on recommendations of interdisciplinary faculty committee.

Faculty Recognition Awards

Criteria: Full professors with no more than four years at that rank, associate and assistant professors are eligible for these awards honoring significant achievements in scholarly research and/or creative endeavors, teaching, advising and mentoring, and service to the University.

University Undergraduate Teaching Awards

Criteria: These awards honor demonstrated excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level. Any tenure-track faculty member who has been in the professorial ranks for more than two years is eligible for nomination.

John H. D'Arms Faculty Awards for Distinguished Graduate Mentoring in the Humanities

Criteria: Tenured faculty in the Humanities who have directed a substantial number of dissertations are eligible for these awards which recognize superb scholars who are also exceptional mentors. One or two students in the graduate programs of each faculty recipient will receive an award for summer research travel.

Henry Russel Lectureship

Criteria: Considered one of the University’s highest honors for a senior member of its faculty, the Henry Russel Lectureship is awarded annually in recognition of a scholar's exceptional achievements in research and scholarship and/or creative endeavors and an outstanding record of teaching, mentoring, and service. Active members of the faculty in any discipline at the rank of professor are eligible.
Selection Process: Nominations may originate from deans, directors, and department/program heads and from executive, promotion, or award committees. Reviewed by an interdisciplinary selection committee of senior faculty.

Henry Russel Award

Criteria: Recognizes distinguished scholarship or authorship, creativity in the arts, and conspicuous ability as a teacher. Associate and assistant professors are eligible provided that they have been tenure-track instructional faculty for not more than six years at the time of nomination.
Selection Process: Nominations may originate from deans, directors, and department/program heads; from executive, promotion, or award committees; or from individual faculty members and students. Reviewed by an interdisciplinary selection committee of senior faculty.

Faculty Nominated Outstanding Graduate Student Instructor Awards

How Often Awarded: Annually
Criteria: Eligible students will have completed at least two terms (not necessarily consecutive) as Graduate Student Instructors. The awards honor GSIs who have demonstrated exceptional ability and creativity as teachers, continuous development as teachers, outstanding service as advisors and mentors, and steady growth as scholars.
Outstanding Process: Department/program heads, individual faculty, and students nominate 2 GSIs; interdisciplinary committee reviews and sends recommendations to Rackham, which selects winners.

Michigan Campus Compact for Community Service-Learning

Criteria:This award is presented to a member of the faculty who has made a distinctive contribution to teaching in courses at the first- or second-year level in the fields of Mathematics, History, and Modern Languages. The American Medical Women's Association Gender Equity Award

Criteria: The most prestigious teaching award given by the Medical School honors dedication to quality preclinical and clinical teaching, enthusiasm for students, and their continuing effort to improve the knowledge and experience of each medical student.

Lifetime Achievement Award in Medical Education

Criteria: Recognizes exceptional contributions to medical education in the M.D., Ph.D. and resident programs, over a lifetime.

Medical Student Award for Teaching Excellence

Criteria: Clinical faculty member below the rank of associate professor who has best upheld the ideals of medical education.

School of Music, Theatre and Dance
Harold Haugh Award
Award Amount: $5,000 ($2,000 with a $3,000 stipend to the recipient's faculty fund)

How Often Awarded: Annually
Criteria: Excellence in private studio teaching; the recipient of this Award will deliver a lecture or a lecture-demonstration under the auspices of the School of Music, Theatre & Dance during the fall term of the following University year—open to students, faculty, and the public. The subject of the lecture should relate to the philosophies and techniques of teaching that the recipient believes to be of greatest significance.
Selection Process: Each SMTD department, by secret vote, nominates a recipient. The terms further provide that the Executive Committee selects the recipient from among departmental nominees. The nomination packet should contain (1) the nominee’s most current curriculum vitae, (2) an in-depth letter of nomination from the chair on behalf of the department, and (3) letters from current students. Unsolicited letters of support from other individuals will also be welcomed.

School of Natural Resources and Environment
Students for SNRE Outstanding GSI Teaching Awards

Selection Process: Nominated by any faculty member of the College of Pharmacy, or by a student in the College. Candidates are reviewed by a selection committee consisting of the Teaching Effectiveness Committee and a student representative from the P4 year.

Criteria: Recognizes a faculty member in the School of Social Work who has achieved national recognition in scholarship and service, demonstrated excellence in teaching and mentoring, provided outstanding service to the School and the University, and contributed significantly to the professional community.

Deadline: The committee announces the award in winter term and then announces the awardee by May 31
