Instructional Development Fund
Rolling Deadline: This fund is now closed. We will begin accepting applications for the 2014-2015 academic year on July 1, 2014.
At that point, applications will be accepted until funds are exhausted.
Small grants up to $500 from CRLT’s Instructional Development Fund support innovative activities to improve teaching and learning at the University of Michigan.
The competition is open year-round, on the Ann Arbor campus of the University, to all tenured and tenure-track faculty; clinical instructional faculty; and Lecturers who have continuing appointments and course development responsibilities (i.e., an assignment from the dean, chair, or designee to develop a new course or significantly revise an existing course).
To ensure that a variety of applicants have the opportunity to implement innovative teaching and learning activities, recipients of IDF grants during an academic calendar year (Sept-August) will not be eligible to receive funding for an IDF grant during the next academic calendar year, but they are welcome to apply again in the following year.
For the 2013-2014 academic year, applications will be accepted at any time of the year until funds are exhausted. Approximately 20 projects are funded yearly, depending on the amounts requested.
All applications are handled electronically.
- Prepare a 1 page or less proposal, indicating the need for the grant, the learning approach or teaching philosophy upon which the activities are based, and the intended learning goals or outcomes for the project. Include an itemized budget.

For Lecturers ONLY: The Chairperson or designee should send an e-mail to email@example.com confirming that the proposal is being submitted by a Lecturer who has (1) a continuing appointment on the Ann Arbor campus of the University of Michigan; and (2) course development responsibilities (i.e., an assignment from the dean, chair, or designee to develop a new course or significantly revise an existing course).
Expenses that can be covered by these grants may include, but are not limited to, supplies and equipment, programming or research assistance, fees and expenses for student field trips, honoraria for classroom guest speakers, fees and expenses for conferences directly related to teaching, and summer projects aimed at developing or enhancing courses. Funding may not be used to reimburse costs already incurred.
Funding decisions usually can be provided within one to two weeks from the time a proposal is received.
CRLT asks all grant recipients to help disseminate their results by completing a brief web form within three months of the project’s completion. These reports will be publicly displayed on the CRLT Grants Reporting website.
