CRLT offers a variety of services for faculty new to the University of Michigan. These programs are designed to help faculty learn about UM students, find the resources they need to be successful, and begin to develop a community of colleagues. Programs include:
The Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Center for Research on Learning and Teaching (CRLT) will once again conduct a New Faculty Orientation to introduce all new faculty to the University of Michigan. New Faculty Orientation will be held on Wednesday, August 27, 2008 from 8:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m., in the Michigan League.
The program will include remarks by UM officials and faculty members, as well as interactive sessions in which faculty can share experiences and strategize about good teaching. The program will include a luncheon in the League Ballroom, during which the President and Provost will address the new faculty. An Information Fair, with representatives from key University offices will provide materials and answer questions about life at the University of Michigan. For more information, contact Carolyn Parker (cwparker@umich.edu; 763-0159).
In consultation with the Dean's Office, CRLT provides support for new faculty in the College of Engineering. Programming has included a fall retreat for new faculty to discuss teaching and other topics of professional interest, one-on-one consultations, observations, and midterm student feedback sessions.
CRLT also can facilitate a midterm student feedback session for all GSIs and faculty associated with a large course. A consultant facilitates a feedback session for each GSI providing confidential and tailored feedback for each section.
Faculty can use this process to:
*Start a one-on-one discussion with each GSI about how things are going, based on what the GSI has learned through the feedback process.
*Initiate a group discussion with the instructional team to talk about how things are going in the course as a whole, such as the interface between lecture and section.
CRLT consultants also are available to help facilitate an instructional team's discussion about student feedback or other issues relating to a course.
For more information about the process, contact Matt Kaplan by phone (936-0644) or email (mlkaplan@umich.edu).
