Emerging Tech: Piazza

The Emerging Technology workshop series highlights tools that have proven to be useful for promoting active student engagement both inside and outside the classroom. The three highlighted tools, Piazza , M+Box , and CTools Test Center, are adaptable to a variety of instructional goals and class sizes. Participants will be introduced to each tool before the seminar through 1-2 short videos (<10 minutes). At the workshop, participants will explore the affordances of the tools in a hands-on guided tour and will reflect on potential uses for their own teaching. We’ll also provide tips and advice from faculty who have successfully implemented the tools. Participants who attend one or more of the workshops will be able to register for a mini-consult follow-up session on October 15 or 16.

Please bring a laptop or tablet to the workshop.

CRLT Players: Negotiating Race in Humanities Classrooms

Using theatre as a means to provoke dialogue, this session will examine how questions of social identity and difference enter Humanities and Social Science classrooms in two major ways: through the course material, and through the embodied experiences of teacher and students. The discussion will center on a performance of Laura Leffler-McCabe and Blake Bolan’s monologue entitled “Failing,” a short play that examines one instructor’s struggle to understand her students’ sometimes surprising responses to the readings she’s assigned. Ultimately, the session will focus on strategies for creating more inclusive learning spaces.

Leading Discussions in the Social Sciences and Humanities

How can I heighten student participation in my sections? What are different ways I can plan a discussion and ask questions of students? How can I confront challenges in my classroom discussions? This seminar will provide participants with strategies for addressing these questions in social science and humanities classrooms. Seminar participants will learn and practice techniques for facilitating discussions, managing controversies, asking effective questions, and enhancing student participation.
