GSM Workshops 2013 - 2014

This workshop is designed to give GSMs and GSI Coordinators a framework for observing their GSIs' classes and collecting student feedback. Using role plays and interactive activities, participants will learn how to set up classroom visits, collect objective data during an observation, and use the consultation process to help GSIs be more reflective about their teaching. Participants in this workshop will also learn how to collect midterm feedback from students using small-group discussions and how to use that feedback in a consultation with the GSI. Dinner will be served.

This workshop is an introduction to the various strategies that GSMs and GSI Coordinators can use during the training and development of GSIs. We will model and discuss the use of video, case studies, role plays, brainstorming, and other approaches to GSI training. We will also discuss what the most important components of a GSI training program are. This workshop is ideal for GSMs and GSI Coordinators planning a new GSI training experience from scratch, but is also useful for those looking to revise an already existing program.

Lunch will be served. Please let us know any dietary restrictions in the comments section below.

In a practice teaching session, instructors deliver informal lessons of five to twenty minutes to their peers. Participating instructors then offer each other feedback on their teaching while simultaneously reflecting on their own teaching. At this workshop, participants will learn how to run practice teaching sessions to maximize the benefit for GSIs. Participants will take part in an actual practice teaching session and discuss what makes a practice teaching session work best.
