Mission Statement


The Center for Research on Learning and Teaching (CRLT) is dedicated to the support and advancement of learning and teaching at the University of Michigan. Staff at the Center work collaboratively with faculty, Graduate Student Instructors (GSIs), and the academic administration to develop a University culture that values and rewards teaching, respects and supports individual differences among learners, and encourages the creation of learning environments in which diverse students can learn and excel.

CRLT focuses on:

Faculty and GSI Development

  • Providing grant support for faculty, departmental, and college projects that advance effective innovative learning and teaching
  • Consulting on curricular development and evaluation
  • Assisting with the infusion of multiculturalism into the curriculum
  • Providing programs that emphasize the teaching and learning of diverse students
  • Consulting with individual faculty members and GSIs regarding teaching
  • Providing campus-wide seminars and orientations for faculty and GSIs
  • Assisting with departmental and college seminars and retreats
  • Assisting with the advocacy for effective settings for learning and teaching

Evaluation and Assessment

  • Assisting with program evaluation: e.g., the evaluation of teaching, instructional technology, and curriculum
  • Assisting with the assessment of student learning
  • Assisting with faculty grants that include educational components

Instructional Technology

  • Disseminating technologies that enhance teaching and learning
  • Providing information about useful applications and facilitating information exchange among units

Research and Dissemination

  • Generating research knowledge that advances learning and teaching at the University of Michigan
  • Disseminating research knowledge and information about learning and teaching to University faculty, academic administrators, and the national higher educational community

Staff Development and Collaboration

  • Collaborating with other University offices and programs involved in learning and teaching initiatives
  • Providing a challenging, stimulating, varied, collaborative, and supportive environment for CRLT staff members
